Linstow, Germany (dpa) - Florian Molzahn, a 31-year-old fitness trainer from the western German city of Solingen, was crowned Mister Germany 2016 at the weekend. Molzahn beat out 15 other contestants in the final competition, organized by the Miss Germany Corporation and held in Linstow near the northern port city of Rostock on Saturday evening. The winner said in his acceptance speech that he had decided to take part to promote an organization for children with heart illnesses. "Now I can do it and that is just awesome!" he said.
More than 1,000 men from across Germany had applied to take part in the male beauty contest. The finalists participated in two rounds of judging: one wearing jeans and no shirt, and another wearing a suit. In the second round he impressed the judges - who included current Miss Germany Olga Hoffmann - and the hundreds of members of the audience with his choice of suit and tie, gaining a total of 360 points to clinch the title. Second place went to Mister Schleswig-Holstein Oleg Justus, from Germany's far north, while Mister Central Germany, Mathias Baron, from the state of Hesse, took third place.
The winners received watches and a photo-shoot as prizes. All the candidates had earlier been taken on holiday to Egypt. Molzahn said on Sunday that he was very tired, but also incredibly happy. "It hasn't really sunk in yet. It will take a while," he said.
