The suave, charismatic, handsome and talented Hyderabadi boy is a graduate of Aurora Degree College and this charming hunk first worked as a ground staff for SpiceJet and then as a technical support assistant for Dell Computers. But he knew that modelling and acting were something he always wanted to do.

Rohit Khandelwal won the Mr India 2015 title and earned him the right to represent India in the Mr. World 2016 contest. He also won the Stay-On Mr Active and Provogue Personal Care Best Actor awards in the national contest.

From technical support assistant to an actor and a model, how did that happen?
I was working with Dell technical support as an assistant in 2010, right after my graduation but modelling and acting were something I was always willing to do after my school days but I never had the courage and support to do it. When I was working with Dell, I always used to participate in rendezvous, co-curricular activities, anything which had to do with dance and acting. My friends have always encouraged me and told me that this is what I should go ahead with and take it up as a profession but still I didn't have the courage and that's when my brother once told me, you never have to regret about things in your life and you should just go for it. I honestly didn't have any contacts in Mumbai, I just came here. I had planned to do my MBA as well if things don't work out for me in modelling and acting. So this is how my journey was. From a technical support assistant to this, it was pretty difficult but finally, I have come down to Mumbai and just trying my luck.

What struggles did you face before winning Mr India 2015?
Well, when we talk about struggles, there were lots of ups and downs in life before winning MR India 2015 but this is what I have always loved to do. As I told you before also during my school days, modelling and acting were something I always wanted to do so I wouldn't call that a struggle.
I was just following my heart and was doing what my heart was telling me to do. When I came to Bombay, I had no contacts, I didn't even had anyone to go to. I randomly went to a gym and saw this good looking 6 feet guy and I walked up to him and asked how does it work here? Where do I go? What should I do? He also didn't know much and so we both started going to any auditions and that's how I have started from the scratch.
As they say, a thousand miles journey starts with a single step so that's how I started. I have learnt from my mistakes. I even remember the first shoot I had with the print that was after losing 5 to 10 kgs, I had around 20 changes but I could just do 5 and the coordinator had to tell me that you can't do it but I have learnt from there. So when I went next time, I had 10 changes then I kept doing a lot of those. So I believe that you should keep doing it and you will finally get it. So I started with that and started getting better projects. I worked with some big brand names too and one day after being in Mumbai for around 3 months, I got my first television advertisement with Kareena Kapoor, it was my first TVC and I just couldn't believe it at that moment. I was standing in the line for 2 hours, amidst around 50 or 100 handsome guys and I didn't even knew whether it will work out or not and then I just got a call that you're selected. That's when I learnt in Mumbai all you require is hard work and patience for things to happen to you. So after that I have always been positive and confident.
You're all set to represent India at Mr World, how's your preparation going?
I am really excited to represent India at Mr World. Preparation has just started, it's going pretty well. I'm soon going to start my military training, survival training which is a very important part. I am working on my speech, diction and at the same time I am even getting more proactive on my social media. So I am working on all the aspects required to win the title.
Are you in touch with former Mr Indias who have represented us in Mr World for any guidance?
Yes, I recently met Prateek Jain for a show in Rajasthan and did share a few things about Mr World. He was guiding me and telling me the things that he came across and how amazing and incredible it is to go there and compete with all the contestants. But yes there is more to catch upon with Prateek Jain about Mr World.

You have done shows like Yeh Hai Aashiqui, Million Dollar Girls and other episodics on Television before participating in Mr India, do you think it helped you in any way during the contest?
I think it totally helped me because every experience is a good experience, it teaches you something or the other thing. What I have learnt from Yeh Hai Aashiqui, Million Dollar Girl is confidence. This time, Mr India wasn't just about good looks, good height or good body, it was also about charm, it was about acting. This time, we had sub-contests like Best actor and YHA/Million Dollar girl experience helped me to win that subtitle sub-contest and also it gave me a lot of confidence. So yes it did help me a lot.

How difficult is it to survive in Television industry? How would you describe your journey so far?
It can be any industry, be it Television or anywhere else, you'll find struggles everywhere. You just have to be an exception, you just have to keep working. Maybe the show you did, didn't do well, but whatever you did that will help you get lot of things in future. I believe personally, that I need to be an exception. I need to prove myself, need to show my talent and do something different every time to survive in television industry. So its not difficult, it's just that you have to work really hard to be different from others.
Talking about my journey, it has been wonderful. After Million Dollar girl, I got few projects which were going on but as soon as I heard about Mr India, I thought this is something that I wanted to do. This was just after a month I did that show for Channel V.
And then preparation started. I watched last year's videos 15 times to know what exactly this is like and how it's going to be at Mr India. so I went with the full-fledged plan.

Has life changed in any manner after winning the Mr India title?
After winning Mr India title, things have changed drastically in my life. The title hasn't just got me that tag of Mr India, it has given me a lot of exposure and visibility. People have started knowing me, of course, there is an added responsibility as well. Beyond everything else, I have become more confident about myself because I never thought I will ever be Mr India. I just went to give my best and when I won it, it was really like winning an award in front of thousands of good looking men. Earning this title is being the most desirable men in the country, so it gave me a lot of confidence, faith and also hope to do a lot more in my life. So yeah it has changed my life drastically.

Everyone has their eyes on Bollywood, anything as such in the pipeline for you?
I have recently got offers but I am very particular about the kind of work I do. I really want to do a good role. For me good work and also a good banner is important. As of now it's too early. I got some offers for television shows and also a movie offer too but I am not too keen as I have to focus on Mr World. Maybe post that, I will take up something really good. So yeah there are a few things in the pipeline but my focus is on just Mr World.

What would you advice to all the young boys who want to take up modelling/acting as a career?
I think if they are very keen and passionate to do it, they should definitely do it. It is all about getting a change in you, life doesn't change by chance, it changes by getting a change in you. So just give your best, have patience and give yourself some time. Just work on yourself and see senior models and actors how they started their journey. All it requires is a bit of patience and faith, so just have that and you'll be up there.
