Anwesh Sahoo: Mr. Gay World India 2016

After an absence in the competition last year, India will have a representative in the eight edition of Mr. Gay World 2016. Anwesh Sahoo was selected as Mr. Gay World India (MGWI) last January 25, 2016 in Mumbai, India. The 20-year old engineering student and blogger who hailed from Odisha will participate in the competition which will be held April 19-23, 2016 in Malta. This is the eight edition of the said contest. The winner of the 7th edition last year, Klaus Burkart of Germany resigned from his position and the title was given to Mass Luciano of Hongkong.

Anwesh is a student at the IIIT (International Institute of Information Technology) Delhi. He will be mentored by Sushant Divgikar, who represented India in the 2014 Mr. Gay World Competition, and is the national director of the Indian Competition.

“Almost four years back I finally put an end to months of self-denial, accepted my true self, and assured myself of how I am not here to suffer, I am here to make an impact… Perhaps the most difficult part of this journey has been waking myself up every morning and telling myself- My dreams are indeed valid,” say Sahoo in his FB post.

“I chose ‘fitting out’ which is opposed to fitting in as the theme for my campaign cause. Masculinity and femininity are being redefined. People need to be empowered for who they are. I drew inspiration for this campaign from my struggle to be accepted in school,” says Sahoo.

“I realised that being queer was beautiful and was able to accept myself. My sister was very supportive and helped me tell my parents. From being bullied in school to winning MGWI; it has been such an amazing journey,” he says

“Sushant told me I will get a lot of hate mail for being MGWI, from those who are homophobic; but I am ready for that too. It is in fact a great honour for me, to inspire others," he adds.
