Throwback Wednesday: Tom Nuyens - Mister World 1996

 

Since there is a very strong possibility that Mister World 2016 will be held this year as news that it will be held in Cardiff, Wales surfaced in social media, we will be bracing again for a very interesting international male pageant season this year. There is no definite schedule though when it will be held.

The Mister World competition is a male beauty pageant sponsored by the Miss World Organization. The competition is biennial and was founded in 1996. The entrants compete in various activities including waterskiing, mountain biking, and marathon running. The current Mister World is Nicklas Pedersen of Denmark who was crowned on June 15, 2014 in Torbay, England. Traditionally, Mister World lives in London during his reign.


So, with the prospect of Mister World 2016, let us go back into the past winners of this very prestigious male pageant. I will be featuring here the very first winner of Mister World when it was held on September 20, 1996 in Istanbul, Turkey. The representative of Belgium, Tom Nuyens bested about 49 other candidates. Gabriel Soto of Mexico became first runner-up and Karahan Cantay, the host delegate from Turkey made it as second runner-up. Tom was 20 years when he won the title and was a earning his degree in sports science. He was born on 18 March 1976 in Wilrijk Antwerp, Belgium.


Winning Mr. World opened the door for a successful modelling career that saw him appear in TV advertising campaigns, including Macy’s. He is now into TV presenting and few other endeavors.
